Signaling Solutions

Wayside Signaling & Indication

Taking LED signal performance, safety and reliability to an unprecedented level

Our Signal journey in North America commenced with the field trial of our 110V Wayside ‘Classic’ Signal at Union Station Toronto in 2010 and their flawless operation led to us providing all of the signals on the 1st phase of the project in 2017. The Union Station success opened up the door to the wider Class 1 Railroad 12V Wayside Signal opportunity and led to the development of our Wayside Signal SearchLITE and ColorLITE series.

Features & benefits:

  • All modules have same physical footprint and have been retrofit tested to most existing signal housings
  • LED technology gives proven long and predictable service life providing cost reduction in asset operation and maintenance
  • AREMA+ thermal shock tested to replicate and exceed real field temperature extremes and variations
  • Plug and Play compatibility to existing interlockings, including hot and cold filament tests
  • Unique 5/16 Lightout detection
  • Phantom signal reduction
We have delivered unparalleled LED Signal reliability on the UK rail network with over 40 million fault free operational hours and real field operational life data in excess of 13 years

Taking LED signal performance, safety and reliability to an unprecedented level, whilst helping save millions off the bottom line of operational budgets.

Over the last 15 Years, Unipart Dorman with the support of Unipart Rail has delivered unparalleled LED Signal reliability on the UK rail network with over 40 million fault free operational hours and real field operational life data in excess of 13 years.

Establishing a 95% share of all LED signals on the network and installing over 100,000 units, Unipart Dorman also introduced innovative industry firsts during this time such as Zero Maintenance Self Cleaning Signals and Integrated Lightweight Signaling (ILS).

ALT & HD ALT

Assisted Lift Trunnion

To increase worker safety and reduce installation time, Unipart Dorman has developed a new assisted lift trunnion which uses progressive rate spring technology to reduce the lifting force required as the post is moved from the horizontal to the vertical plane.

  • Can be used for a wide range of signals
  • Simplified installation using basic handtools
  • Permanent lifting eye allows the use of a variety of readily available mechanical handling devices
  • Signal sighting is done from ground level
  • Complies with PAN/E/CE 0017

HD Assisted Lift Trunnion

In 2018 a new requirement was raised by the industry for a bigger and better version of the ALT which would deliver a wider range of signals including heavier heads with 2 Junction Indicator arms or multiple route indicators for example.

This drove the development of the HD ALT which uses a double spring configuration to deliver the same lifting force characteristics as the original ALT but enabling it to be used with heavier, more complex head types and taller posts.

The HD ALT also utilised digital design techniques which fine tuned the internal Design for Manufacture process and customer’s Design for Reliability and Ergonomic requirements.

Track Circuit Assistor (TCA)

Improving track shunting when rails are contaminated with rust, the build up on rust on rails can prevent the track circuit being activated when a train passes.

This problem is overcome when the TCA is fitted the DMUs.

Track Circuit Failure

Track circuits affected by rust are not a problem for heavier trains, but lighter DMUs do not have enough weight to break through the rust layer, and in certain cases this can lead to a train not being detected by the signalling system. The improved suspension, better wheel-rail profiles and widespread use of disc-brakes on DMUs also contribute to the problem as there is less abrasion to the rail and a resulting build-up of rust which effectively acts as an insulator.
